New “morning-after pill” on the market

Under the name Ellaone® a new "morning-after pill" is on the German market. Ellaone® is approved for contraception after unprotected sexual intercourse up to five days or 120 hours afterwards, previous pills were only effective up to 72 hours afterwards at most. Taking a single Ellaone® tablet once should stop the ovum ripening and prevent ovulation occurring. As with previous “morning-after pills” existing pregnancies will not be aborted.

Importance of taking it promptly

This applies for all pills: the more time has passed since the unprotected intercourse the more the effect diminishes. Consequently taking it promptly within 24 hours is highly recommended. Within 24 hours the effectiveness of previous morning-after pills is 95 percent, up to 48 hours only 85 percent, after that only 58 percent. Even with the new pill the effectiveness diminishes with each passing hour. Within 48 - 120 hours its effectiveness is only around 60 percent.

Only available on prescription

Until now it has only been available on prescription. See a doctor as soon as possible; at weekends and bank holidays go to the emergency doctor or the emergency outpatient’s department of a hospital. Like all medically prescribed methods of contraception the morning-after pill is also free of charge for women aged over 21.

pro familia are trying to have the prescription obligation abolished as there is no need to visit a doctor due to the excellent compatibility of this new pill and so valuable time could be saved. With this type of follow-up contraception pregnancy termination can be avoided without any health risk.
